Introducing New Players To The Game

Sometimes people ask me how to introduce new players into d&d.

Take a table, sit them around, give them dice to fidget.

“You’re on a cliff and there’s a cave next to you with red drapes flailing in the wind. You know there’s a fuckton of treasure down there. What? I don’t know. Magical mirrors and stuff. You hear a scream coming from below. What do you do?”

Great, you’re now playing.

Just A Random Idea I Had

I’m trying to sleep but random things keep popping into my head.

An egg that hatches into a small spirit. He says to you “I’ll come back in a year to destroy the world. Prepare yourself”

Then, he disappears.

The Many Deaths Of The Barrowmaze - Episode 8

This is going to be the last Barrowmaze for a while, so if you’re here for that you’ll be disappointed. My party decided to set it aside (for now) after a very intense session that almost killed them all.

The Caribbean Playtest

After finishing everything I had to do in my life and leaving me some free time I decided to visit some of my friends that live a couple of hours away. At the time I had just released my own dungeon so I told myself “eh, why not” and tried to introduce all of them to D&D B/X. There were 4 of them, with completely zero experience. It has been a blast. This recap will be both a play report as well as a wall of considerations about new players.

A new challenger approaches! Basyli is a Magic-User played by a new player. He had his share of 5e over the years but it’s his first time playing OSR, we’ll see how it goes (especially since he has 8 CON and 8 INT). The party found him in one of the pits scattered across the dungeon and now he joined the A-Team.

We’re back. After a couple of weeks of delay that I spent playing my own adventure irl (Blog post coming soon) we’re back into the barrowmaze. Well… Kinda, since my players spent most of the session exploring Ironguard Motte instead.

The Keeper Of The Lake

You are falling. The whole place is falling, or maybe it’s going up, who knows? It has been the same sensation since you’ve entered the tower. A violent one. But your feet are still on the ground.

The tower was in the middle of the lake, people said there was treasure. But you now know, she is there. She is singing to you and now you’re lost, wandering, confused. The stairs go up but you’re going down, aimlessly wandering, there is no escape. The Keeper of the lake never lets her prey out, but maybe you’ll be the lucky one?
